This book changed my life when I read it. I know it’s super famous, and maybe a cliche, but it is one exquisite story. The characterization stands out beautifully, and the kindness is immeasurable. I think Jean Valjean is the most benevolent man who has ever existed (or not existed).
This is one I’m still working on, but it is quite splendid, and I just adore the way Pip describes people and their personalities.
“We spent as much money as we could, and got as little for it as people made up their minds to give us. We were always more or less miserable, and most of our acquaintance were in the same condition. There was a gay fiction among us that we were constantly enjoying ourselves, and a skeleton truth that we never did. To the best of my belief, our case was in the last aspect a rather common on” -Pip
